Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PNG and BMP entries?
Inside an ICO each image is stored either as a compressed PNG (common for 256×256) or as an uncompressed DIB/BMP with an AND mask (traditional for small sizes). Both are valid; this viewer decodes both.
Why does my .ico have several images?
Windows picks the best size for each place: 16 px in title bars and lists, 32/48 px on the desktop, 256 px for large thumbnails. Bundling all of them keeps every view sharp.
Can I extract icons from an .exe or .dll?
Not directly — this tool reads .ico/.cur files. Extract the icon resource with a resource editor first, or use our editor to recreate it.
Is the file uploaded?
No. The icon is parsed with JavaScript in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
